This little girl looking so nervously at the camera may never have seen one before! I lived in the highlands of Papua New Guinea in the 1970s and twice visited the world renowned Highland Show. The show is a marvellous opportunity to gain an overview of PNGs cultural diversity. The shows were first held in the 1950s, as a means of gathering together the different tribes and clans. At times there could be more than 40,000 painted warriors dancing to the beat of the Kundu drums.
This little lady, from Lufa District, wears magnificent Bird of Paradise feathers in her head-dress.
