The best chance of seeing these beautiful birds is from sea-watching points around the coast in winter, particularly in northern Scotland, Shetland and Orkney – sadly not in Wales.
Though they do not breed in Britain, approximately 11,000 pairs pass through in Spring and/or Autumn. I have painted a male and a female in summer plumage, the male sports the long tail feathers – hence the name.
